Student life at Bates College centers on a rich residential and campus culture. ABA’s campus planning explored the revitalization of underutilized campus buildings, investment in the surrounding neighborhood, integration of campus programs with new student housing, campus landscape initiatives, and development of a multi-phase plan for implementation. In the first phase of the plan, ABA designed a 93,500 sf new residential complex and campus green, housing over 240 students with the campus bookstore and a one-stop center with full print, copy, mail, packaging and shipping services for Bates and the local community. Bridging the campus with the surrounding community, the new complex and green spaces present a prominent College gateway. The project includes energy efficient building systems and a sustainable landscape, and is designed to meet LEED Silver.
