The 183,000 sf Olin Library was constructed in 1962 and is the central library of Washington University in St. Louis. ABA’s Master Plan for the Library reinforces it as the heart of the campus, while acknowledging the strengths of its mid-century modernist design. As well, it offers a conceptual design that supports the evolving functions and services of a 21st century library. The Master Plan is being implemented by ABA, with a design for renovations and expansion underway. A new interior street through the center of the building will connect the north and south sides of the campus and provide opportunities along its length for exhibition of the Library’s exceptional Special Collections. A four-story tower constructed within an existing atrium will provide additional exhibition areas, seminar and study spaces, and an expansion of the Library’s popular Whispers Cafe. Below-grade, two new floors will provide collaborative work areas for staff and students, and on-site storage for the Library’s Special Collections.
