CAMBRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY
Partnering with William Rawn Associates, ABA completed the renovation and expansion of the historic Cambridge Public Library. ABA led renovation of the historic 27,000-square-foot library and an extensive public and regulatory review process. ABA also provided interior design and furnishings selections for the entire complex, including the children’s room and new meeting and study spaces.
ABA’s renovation transformed the existing stacks into a new Young Adults Library; introduced an Information Commons into the historic reading rooms; and created staff and administrative workspaces. The site design incorporates an underground parking garage and new public park.
This LEED Silver project has received more than 20 design awards. It was honored by the American Institute of Architects and the Massachusetts and Cambridge Historical Commissions, and it received the Harleston Parker Medal, the Boston Society for Architecture’s highest honor.
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Project Size: 27,000 sf
Sustainability: Certified LEED Silver. The design incorporated a “double skin” glass wall facing the park, which acts as a thermal blanket and maximizes natural daylighting. Underground parking maximizes green space, and bike racks and showers encourage staff and visitors to use green-friendly transportation.
