KALAMAZOO INSTITUTE OF ARTS

Kalamazoo Institute of Arts serves western Michigan as a resource for studio art, education, and exhibitions. ABA’s 64,000-square-foot renovation and expansion of this Modernist museum introduced new public spaces, galleries, studios, administrative spaces, and facilities for art preparation and collections care. The original building, designed by SOM, had become dark and hidden, with entrance from a side parking lot, and it lacked a sense of connectivity between interior and exterior.

ABA developed the new program with the community, in meetings, workshops, and collaborative design sessions, which included more than 400 people from Kalamazoo. The resultant 64,000-square-foot renovation and expansion introduced new public spaces, galleries, studios, administrative spaces, and facilities for art preparation and collections care. A new wing includes a community auditorium for lectures, banquets, and symphony rehearsals.
