YALE UNIVERSITY HUMANITIES QUADRANGLE

Ann Beha Architects, now Annum Architects, designed Yale’s new Humanities Quadrangle, centralizing numerous academic departments in one location and creating greater opportunities for collaborative work in a historic building. The existing 195,000 SF Collegiate Gothic complex is organized around two landscaped courtyards and includes housing, faculty offices, classrooms, and seminar rooms. The design reconsiders entry, orientation, and wayfinding systems; classrooms and program areas; faculty offices; and administrative services. A new 13,000 SF space for a 280-seat lecture hall and 100-seat film screening room was excavated below a redesigned courtyard. The project renewed and reconfigured teaching and social settings; repurposed historic interiors; and reconsidered former residential spaces as clusters for faculty offices, collaborative workplace, and research.

Location: New Haven, Connecticut

SustainabilityCertified LEED Gold. Rainwater will be captured, filtered, and sent to the campus power plant cooling towers and boilers. Existing windows will be replaced in kind with interior storm panels, leading to a tighter envelope. Hydronic heating and cooling valances, installed in most of the offices, operate without electricity.
